What you'll accomplish
Competitor tracking is usually the first thing that slips when a demo needs to get built by Friday. A newsletter pile builds up and never gets opened. A Perplexity Space set up once turns that into a five-minute Monday morning check, with sources attached to every claim so you can actually repeat what it tells you in a customer conversation.
What you'll need
What you should see: A new, empty Space with fields for a title, description, and instructions, plus a place to add files or sources. Troubleshooting: If you can't find a Spaces option at all, check that you're signed in rather than browsing anonymously. Space creation requires an account.
Spaces support custom instructions that apply to every question you ask inside that Space, so you only have to describe what you want once.
Exact text to copy into the instructions field:
I track these competitors: [Competitor A, Competitor B, Competitor C]. I sell [your product category, e.g. industrial automation controllers]. Every time I ask for an update, search for recent news on these named competitors and this product category. For each item, tell me: what changed, why it matters to a technical buyer, and a source I can click to verify it. Flag anything that sounds like a marketing claim rather than a confirmed technical fact.
If you want the digest to compare new competitor claims against your own product's specs, you can add files in the Space's Sources area, generally through an Add Files control. Keep anything you upload here to material you'd already be comfortable sharing outside your company. Internal battle cards or anything under an NDA don't belong in a shared research tool.
Open the Space and ask your standing question.
What you should see: A short digest with a handful of items, each with a plain-language summary and a clickable citation.
Verification step: Before you repeat any specific technical claim to a customer (a new feature, a certification, a benchmark number), click through to the cited source and confirm it actually says what the summary claims. Perplexity's citations point you to where to check. They don't replace the check itself.
There's no confirmed way to make this run automatically on a schedule. Treat it as a recurring habit instead: reopen the Space each Monday and re-ask the same standing question, or a version of it that adds "since last week" to focus on what's new.
